Negli Stati Uniti un gruppo di ricercatori dell’Istituto Nazionale degli Standard e della Tecnologia (NIST) è riuscito ad aumentare l’efficienza del fotovoltaico sperimentando l’applicazione della tecnica acustica delle “gallerie sussurranti” sulle onde luminose. In particolare hanno sviluppato un nuovo rivestimento ottico, costituito da migliaia di microsfere di vetro, che permette di aumentare l’assorbimento della luce ed è facilmente incorporabile nel processo attuale di produzione delle celle fotovoltaiche.
Le onde luminose che colpiscono le migliaia di sfere di vetro presenti nel rivestimento progettato dal NIST si diffondono sulle pareti delle microsfere proprio come la voce si trasmette sui muri delle cupole. Grazie a questo fenomeno, le celle solari così modificate riescono ad assorbire il 20 % di luce visibile in più circa ed è stato dimostrato sperimentalmente che sono in grado di produrre circa il 20 % di corrente in più.
